Chapter Eight

The next morning, Mark sat next to Alex in his brand new Ford Mustang GT. Steve drove his Mercedes in front of them, heading home.

“You drive very well, Alex.” “Thanks, Dad. Believe me, I’m going to baby this thing. I love it.”

“You sure you’re happy with it? You wouldn’t rather have that Corvette you were dreaming of?”

“Nope. Love it.”

“We’re going to head to Adam and Jack’s place in Malibu. You know I expect you to be on your best behavior.”

“Yes, Dad.” Alex laughed.

“I’m serious. Don’t torment Jackie. Adam’s been through enough with Jack’s and my relationship. He doesn’t need any more grief from a Richfield.”

“Did you and Jack cheat together?”

“No, all of us are in exclusive relationships. That’s why I want you to control yourself. Don’t place anyone in an awkward situation. Can you do that?”

“Am I that irresistible?”

They paused for a red light. Mark turned to look at his son, seeing his seductive smirk. “You don’t need my ego stroking, do you?”

“Fuck yeah. You realize how much my fake dad insulted me? Called me a girl? A fucking faggot cocksucker? Yes, please. Stroke my fragile, insecure ego.”

“Yes. That sounds all too familiar. My dad did it to me as well.”

“What’s their problem? I don’t get it. I would never treat my own son that way.”

“No. Nor shall I.” Mark patted Alex’s leg. “I’m not sure what drives a man to treat his offspring so terribly. Jealousy? Disappointment? I don’t know.”

Steve parked in their driveway, alongside the old Accord.

“Pull into the garage. It’s a two-car and we never bloody use it.”

“How can I? It’s blocked by my car.”

“Yes. All right. Just park behind Steve for now.”

“But isn’t he driving to the beach?”

“We can shuffle them around later. Don’t worry.” Mark checked his watch. “What time was your mother due? This is cutting it close.” Mark climbed out of the car holding the envelope with the Mustang’s paperwork.

Steve admired the new addition. “How did he do, Mark?”

“Well. He’s a good driver.”

Alex hugged Steve playfully. “Don’t worry, copper. No tickets, no accidents.”

“Steven, we need to go to Adam’s place. It’s already nearing noon and Alex’s mom is coming at three-thirty.”

“Can’t we just stop by her place later on?”

“Should I tell her to come tomorrow? She doesn’t want Dad to see you guys.” Alex leaned against Steve, standing on one leg.

“We could reschedule for tomorrow.” Mark walked to the front door. “How upset would she be, Alex?”

“Not too upset. If I call her and let her know.”

“Yes. Call her. It’s too close a time frame and Jack usually likes us to stay for dinner.”

Alex shrugged and took out his mobile phone. “I’ll leave a message for her at work.”

“Okay, love. Sorry.” Mark let them inside the house.

“No big deal.” Alex put the phone to his ear.

“Let me file this.” Mark waved the paperwork. “Get our towels and flip flops, love.” He kissed Steve, noticing Alex watch.

“Yes, I need to leave a message for Iris Lehman, it’s her son Alex.”

Mark headed to their study to file the paperwork in their home office.
